The New York Motor Vehicle Power of Attorney enables a car or truck owner to identify another individual as receiver of powers to perform designated tasks associated with a vehicle. The principal can fill and endorse the document to allow an attorney-in-fact the right to sell, gift, or title an automobile in place of the actual owner. It is not necessary to furnish a POA to register a vehicle in the state of New York, but all other transactions will require the form in the owner’s absence. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles supplies a secondary POA form for specific cases where a semi-trailer or bus is used internationally and/or between the U.S. and the District of Columbia. This document, the NY POA Authorization for International Registration Plan Business (Form IRP-1POA), will only need to be used in special situations outlined on the NY DMV’s website.
