How to Register a Boat

New York requires any boat with a motor, whether electric or fuel-driven, to be registered with the New York DMV.

  • Bill of Sale
  • Boat Registration/Title Application (MV-82B)
  • Hull Identification Number, required for 1973 model year and newer boats before registration.
  • Manufacturer’s Certificate or Statement of Origin, if the boat is new or was never registered.
  • Payment for registration/title fees.
  • Proof of identity.
  • Proof of ownership, such as a New York or out-of-state title, transferable registration, Manufacturer’s Certificate/Statement of Origin, or U.S. Coast Guard document.
  • Sales tax clearance form or proof of sales tax payment.
  • U.S. Coast Guard documentation, if the vessel is federally documented.

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Out-of-state title or transferable registration, signed over to the buyer.
  • Sales tax clearance form, or proof of tax paid.
  • U.S. Coast Guard documentation, if the boat was documented.
