How to Register a Vehicle

- Current Proof of Insurance
- Lien Release: Required if a lienholder is recorded on the title. A lien may be released on the title, by notarized lien release, by Form TR-150, or by a letter from the lienholder.
- Property Tax Payment: Must be paid at the time of registration unless applying for a temporary plate.
- Sales Tax Receipt: Required if the vehicle was purchased from a dealer. If not, sales tax must be paid.
- Title: The title must be assigned to the new owner. The back of the title must include the purchase price, date of sale, odometer reading, and printed names and signatures of the buyer and seller.
Out-of-State Purchase
- Motor Vehicle Examination (Form MVE-1): Required if the title was issued by another state or the bill of sale is from an out-of-state owner. The vehicle and title must be taken to a Kansas motor vehicle inspection station before applying for title and registration.
