How to Register a Vehicle

  • Bill of Sale
  • Current Proof of Insurance
  • Lien Release: Required if a lienholder is recorded on the title. A lien may be released on the title, by notarized lien release, by Form TR-150, or by a letter from the lienholder.
  • Property Tax Payment: Must be paid at the time of registration unless applying for a temporary plate.
  • Sales Tax Receipt: Required if the vehicle was purchased from a dealer. If not, sales tax must be paid.
  • Title: The title must be assigned to the new owner. The back of the title must include the purchase price, date of sale, odometer reading, and printed names and signatures of the buyer and seller.

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Motor Vehicle Examination (Form MVE-1): Required if the title was issued by another state or the bill of sale is from an out-of-state owner. The vehicle and title must be taken to a Kansas motor vehicle inspection station before applying for title and registration.

How to Register a Boat

Kansas requires all vessels powered by motor, including electric motors, or sail, to be registered and numbered through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. To obtain registration, assemble the following documentation online or your nearest State Park:

  • Application for Certificate of Number Kansas Boating Act Form
  • Bill of Sale, if purchased from an individual, Kansas does not require notarization.
  • Hull Identification Number photo or pencil tracing.
  • Payment for registration fees.
  • Proof of sales or compensating tax payment, if applicable.
  • Previous registration number or certificate, if the boat was previously registered.

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Kansas sales tax receipt, if tax was not paid to the out-of-state dealer.
  • Prior registration information, if the boat was previously registered in another state.
