How to Register a Boat
Texas requires most vessels and outboard motors to be titled and registered through Texas Parks and Wildlife. Compile the following forms and required paperwork to present in-person, at your closest county tax assessor’s office or Texas Parks and Wildlife Department facility:
- Bill of Sale or invoice, signed by the seller.
- Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, if the boat is new.
- Outboard Motor Application (PWD 144), if titling or transferring an outboard motor.
- Payment for title, registration, and boat/outboard motor tax.
- Texas title, properly assigned by the seller, if the boat was previously titled in Texas.
- Vessel/Boat Application (PWD 143)
- Verification of serial number / HIN (PWD 504), if the boat or motor was not previously titled.
Out-of-State Purchase
- Affidavit of Fact (PWD 314), if an outboard motor came from a non-title state.
- Out-of-state registration card, if the boat came from a registration-only state.
- Out-of-state title, properly assigned by the seller, if the boat came from a title state.
Applications filed later than 45 working days from the date of sale or the date the boat was brought into Texas may be subject to penalties and interest.
