How to Register a Vehicle

Visit a registration office at a New Jersey MVC facility that is suitable for you and bring the following required documents:

  • Bill of Sale: Required if the vehicle was purchased at auction and is non-titled. Otherwise, it’s helpful.
  • Completed Vehicle Registration Application (Form BA-49)
  • Driver’s License or Other ID
  • Lien Holder Information and Financing Statement: Required if the vehicle is leased or financed.
  • New Jersey Insurance Card or Insurance Company Name and Policy Number

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Application for Certificate of Ownership: Required if the vehicle is transferred from another state.
  • Seller’s Notarized Statement & Last Registration Card: Required if the vehicle is transferred from a state that does not issue titles and must include the year manufactured, make, VIN, and selling price.

Notes

  • New Jersey says to schedule an appointment for a new title or registration, and notes no walk-ins.
