How to Register a Vehicle
Go to a municipal town office near you. If your local municipal town office does not engage in the registration of motor vehicles, you must instead visit a Maine BMV (Bureau of Motor Vehicles).
- Proof of Insurance
- Title Signed Over by the Previous Owner: Required for vehicle models 25 years old and newer
- White and Yellow Copies of the Registration Application and Excise Tax Receipt
Out-of-State Purchase
- Signed Bill of Sale: Required when purchased from an out-of-state dealer
- Maine Sales Tax: 5.5% of the purchase price
Notes
- You must pay the excise (municipal) tax at your town office first.
- If your local town office does not issue registrations, you can finish the process at a BMV branch office.

Boat (Vessel) Registration Forms
- A finalized and endorsed bill of sale
- A completed and signed Maine ATV, Boat, and Snowmobile Registration Application
- Proof of payment remitted to the state for the required excise tax via representation on the bill of sale or a Maine Use Tax Certificate.
- Adequate payment for all taxes and fees
Register a Firearm
Maine does not require a new firearm owner to register a firearm.
