How to Register a Vehicle
Go to a municipal town office near you. If your local municipal town office does not engage in the registration of motor vehicles, you must instead visit a Maine BMV (Bureau of Motor Vehicles).
- Proof of Insurance
- Title Signed Over by the Previous Owner: Required for vehicle models 25 years old and newer
- White and Yellow Copies of the Registration Application and Excise Tax Receipt
Out-of-State Purchase
- Signed Bill of Sale: Required when purchased from an out-of-state dealer
- Maine Sales Tax: 5.5% of the purchase price
Notes
- You must pay the excise (municipal) tax at your town office first.
- If your local town office does not issue registrations, you can finish the process at a BMV branch office.

How to Register a Boat
Maine requires motorboats of any size to be registered before use on Maine waters unless an exemption applies. New boat registrations are completed in person.
- Bill of Sale or dealer paperwork, showing the boat information and purchase details.
- Boat Registration Form
- Excise tax payment, paid to the proper town before registration when required.
- Payment for registration fees.
- Proof of sales tax paid, or Use Tax Certificate, required for new registrations.
- Prior Maine registration number, if the boat was previously registered in Maine.
Out-of-State Purchase
- Proof of sales tax paid, or Use Tax Certificate, if sales tax was not collected or proof is needed.
- Registration information, if the boat was previously registered.

Register a Firearm
Maine does not require a new firearm owner to register a firearm.
