How to Register a Boat

Georgia requires all mechanically propelled vessels and sailboats over 12 feet used on Georgia waters to be registered with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Complete the procedure online through the state of Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources website.

  • Affidavit of Vessel Ownership, if proof of ownership cannot be obtained.
  • Bill of Sale, showing enough information to identify the boat and signed by the buyer and seller.
  • Georgia Vessel Registration Application, signed unless completed through the online system.
  • Georgia paper title, if one was previously issued for the vessel.
  • Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, if the boat is brand new.
  • Payment for registration fees and transaction fees.

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Out-of-state title, if the vessel came from a title state.
  • Original state registration card, recommended/needed when available for an out-of-state vessel.

The seller must report a Georgia boat sale or transfer to DNR within 15 days.
