How to Register a Vehicle

Finalizing the initial registration on a vehicle will require a visit to a West Virginia DMV location to present all applicable paperwork and fees.

Notes

  • The 6% titling sales tax is waived for qualifying new residents if the vehicle is already titled in their name in another state and they meet the exemption requirements.
  • The exemption does not apply to leased vehicles.

How to Register a Boat

Visit a location most convenient for you and have the following ready to go:

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Out-of-state title, properly assigned, if the boat came from a titling state.
  • Registration in the seller’s name, properly reassigned if possible, if the boat came from a registration-only state.

If ownership of a West Virginia-numbered motorboat changes, the owner must notify the commissioner within 15 days of the transfer. Since registrations are not transferable, the new owner should apply for a new title/registration before operating the motorboat.
