How to Register a Boat

All boats powered by motor or sail must be processed for registration within the state of Tennessee. To register in person, visit any of the county clerk offices or do it online.

  • Application for Boat Certificate of Number, certified by a Tennessee county clerk or boat dealer.
  • Bill of Sale, including the date of sale, price, vessel year/make/model/HIN, and buyer and seller names, addresses, phone numbers, and signatures.
  • Hull Identification Number photos, if the boat was built after 1972 and the HIN is missing or not in proper U.S. Coast Guard format.
  • Payment for registration fees.
  • Proof of sales tax payment, certified through the county clerk or dealer.

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Documents proving the vessel was registered to the owner in another state.
  • Proof of sales tax paid in another state, if requesting credit for taxes already paid.

The certified application includes a yellow temporary registration valid for 60 days from the date of certification.
