How to Register a Vehicle
Arrive at your nearest local North Carolina DMV Office with the following forms and documentation:
- Bill of Sale: Optional, but helpful as supporting proof of the transaction.
- Damage Disclosure Statement (MVR-181)
- Driver’s License or ID: The person titling the vehicle must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license or ID.
- Odometer Disclosure Statement (MVR-180)
- Proof of Liability Insurance: Must be from a North Carolina-licensed provider and is required before titling the vehicle.
- Property Taxes: Must be paid for the vehicle being registered.
- Title Application (MVR-1)
Out-of-State Purchase
- Current Out-of-State Registration Card
- One Additional Residency Document: Non-North Carolina residents must also provide one of the following:
- military ID for active-duty military stationed in North Carolina
- student ID showing enrollment in a North Carolina college or university
- Form MVR-614 showing the vehicle is garaged in North Carolina at least six months each year
- court-ordered sale of the vehicle
- registration for a motor home
