How to Register a Boat
Montana requires motorboats, personal watercraft, and sailboats 12 feet or longer to be titled and registered through the County Treasurer in the county where the owner resides. To register a vessel, secure the following documentation for submission at your nearest Country Treasurer’s office or Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks facility:
- Application for Vessel Certificate of Title (Form MV1A), if applying for a Montana vessel title.
- Bill of Sale, if needed to support the ownership transfer.
- Certificate of Title, properly assigned by the previous owner.
- Current registration receipt or certificate of number, if the boat came from a non-title state.
- Lien release, if applicable.
- Manufacturer’s Certificate/Statement of Origin, if the boat is new.
- Payment for title and registration fees.
Out-of-State Purchase
- Out-of-state title, if the boat was titled in another state.
- Out-of-state registration, if the boat came from a non-title state.
The buyer generally has 40 days from the sale date to apply for title and registration. Out-of-state boats properly registered elsewhere may be operated in Montana for up to 90 consecutive days.
