How to Register a Vehicle
Visit a DVS location and bring:
- Application to Title/Register a Vehicle
- Current Odometer Reading
- Insurance Information: Name of insurance company, policy number, and policy expiration date.
- Lienholder Information: The name and address of any current lienholders.
- Valid Identification: A primary document.
- Vehicle Ownership Document: Current vehicle title, Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin, or Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin.
Out-of-State Purchase
- Alternative Ownership Documents: If the current out-of-state title is not available, Minnesota may accept the most recent registration card, a copy of the out-of-state title marked “COPY,” a confirmation of ownership, title application receipt, web dealer title, title summary, or electronic title copy. A Minnesota title will only be issued once the most current out-of-state title is submitted.

Boat (Vessel) Registration Forms
- A filled-out bill of sale form
- A completed Minnesota Watercraft Title and Registration Application
- Proof of ownership via a manufacturer’s certificate of origin, a transferred title, and/or vessel registration.
- Receipt to illustrate evidence of paid tax payment on the boat.
- Documentation of effective vessel insurance
- A driver’s license or identification card
- Payment to cover fees for registration and titling
Firearm Registration Forms
Minnesota does not require registration for any type of firearm, although to acquire a handgun, one must possess a Uniform Firearm Permit to Purchase or a Permit to Carry a Pistol. Background checks to obtain a handgun are necessary for all sales conducted with a federally licensed firearm dealer. To lawfully carry a weapon openly or in a concealed fashion will obligate an individual to apply for a Permit to Carry a Pistol with the following materials:
- A completed Minnesota Uniform Firearm Application Permit to Carry a Pistol (Form Rev-2015)
- Evidence of fulfillment of an accepted gun safety course
- A current Minnesota ID card or driver’s license, or a US Passport
- An approved form of payment for all applicable fees
