How to Register a Boat
Louisiana requires motorized vessels, sailboats 12 feet or longer, and non-motorized houseboats used on Louisiana waters to be registered with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. New registrations and transfers can be submitted in person at LDWF Headquarters in Baton Rouge or by mail.

- Application for Boat Inspection, if the boat is homemade, has no HIN, or has an incorrect HIN.
- Bill of Sale of Boat/Motor, if transferring ownership.
- Boat Registration / Boat and Motor Title Application
- Copy of dealer invoice, if purchased new from a dealer.
- Original Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin, if the boat is new.
- Payment for registration/title fees, and inspection fees if applicable.
- Proof of Louisiana state and local taxes paid, or Tax Payment Certification Form (R-1331), if applicable.
- Title, if the boat was previously titled, financed, homemade, or otherwise required to be titled.
Out-of-State Purchase
- Invoice from the dealer or Bill of Sale, if purchased from an out-of-state dealer.
- Proof of ownership from the titled/registered owner to the dealer, if purchased from an out-of-state dealer.

Out-of-state boaters may operate a vessel with valid out-of-state registration on Louisiana waters for up to 90 consecutive days.
