  • Current Certificate of Title: Must be assigned before a notary with any lien properly released.
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement: Required if the vehicle is not exempt and the back of the title does not include an odometer disclosure

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Notarization rules may differ: If the sale occurs in a state that does not require notarization, the invoice does not have to be notarized.

How to Register a Boat

Louisiana requires motorized vessels, sailboats 12 feet or longer, and non-motorized houseboats used on Louisiana waters to be registered with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. New registrations and transfers can be submitted in person at LDWF Headquarters in Baton Rouge or by mail.

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Invoice from the dealer or Bill of Sale, if purchased from an out-of-state dealer.
  • Proof of ownership from the titled/registered owner to the dealer, if purchased from an out-of-state dealer.
  • Title and/or registration, if the boat was previously titled or registered outside of Louisiana.

Out-of-state boaters may operate a vessel with valid out-of-state registration on Louisiana waters for up to 90 consecutive days.
