How to Register a Vehicle

You have 10 days to register your vehicle after purchase. To register, visit one of California’s DMV locations and bring the following materials:

If the title has been lost, stolen, or damaged:

If the title does not have space to record the mileage:

  • Vehicle/Vessel Transfer and Reassignment Form (Form REG 262): Must be signed by both the buyer and seller.

How to Register a Boat

To register your boat, obtain the following documentation and present it at your nearest California DMV location.

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Out-of-state title, if the vessel is currently registered in another state.
  • Out-of-state Certificate of Number, if applicable.

If the boat was purchased from an out-of-state seller or recently brought into California, the owner must register it with the DMV within 120 days of bringing it into the state.
