How to Register a Gun
The state of West Virginia does not require a registration process for a long gun or handgun. In addition to no system of registration for firearms, no permit is required to obtain a gun through legal channels. For a more extensive rundown of firearm legality or any other firearm-related questions, visit the West Virginia State Police website or call (304) 746-2151.
How to Obtain a Concealed Pistol/Revolver License
Once you have purchased a firearm, you will not be obligated to retain a license to carry the weapon concealed. Only individuals between 18 and 20 are mandated to hold a concealed firearm license. Individuals aged 21 or over may obtain a permit to take advantage of reciprocity law and travel with a concealed handgun in participating states. Licenses remain active for five years from the date of issue before expiration. Here are steps to take to procure a valid West Virginia Concealed Handgun License:
Attend your county sheriff’s office with the following items:
- A fully filled-out and endorsed West Virginia State Police Application for Concealed Pistol/Revolver License.
- A valid form of photo identification.
- A permit fee of $75.
- Proof of completion of an approved firearm familiarity or safety class is available from either the NRA, a certified state instructor, a law enforcement agency, or a branch of the armed forces.
Once your application is accepted, you will receive an additional fee of $25 to run a background check. The approximate processing time for the license is about 45 days from the submission date.
