How to Register a Vehicle
When registering a vehicle in the state of New Mexico, you must appear in person at an MVD Field Office equipped with the following paperwork:
- Bill of Sale (Form 10009): Only required when the Assignment of Title or Dealer Assignment is not completed on the back of the title.
- Certificate of Title: The current outstanding title must be signed by the former owner, and no copies are accepted.
- Odometer Statement: The buyer and seller must agree on the odometer reading. This may be shown on the title, a bill of sale, an odometer disclosure statement, or the application form.
- Proof of Identity
- Proof of Insurance: New Mexico requires minimum liability coverage of:
- $25,000 for bodily injury or death of one person
- $50,000 for bodily injury or death of two or more persons
- $10,000 for property damage in any one accident.
- Proofs of New Mexico Residency: Two are required.
Out-of-State Purchase
- VIN Inspection: Required only for vehicles coming to New Mexico from another state.
Notes
- Emission Certificate of Inspection is required only for Bernalillo County residents.
- Lienholder Information is required only if there is a lienholder on the vehicle.
Boat (Vessel) Registration Forms
- A finalized bill of sale
- A completed and signed Application for Vessel Registration and Title (Form MVD-10003)
- A valid ownership document, either the transferred title or, if no title is required, the prior vessel registration.
- Should a lien be listed on the title, a Release of Lien (Form MVD – 10041) will be required to register.
- An active New Mexico driver’s license or identification card
- Funds to pay all registration fees and taxes
Firearm Registration Forms
New Mexico does not mandate any type of registration for weapons and does not require an individual to procure a permit or license to buy or own. When purchasing a firearm, whether, from an FFL dealer or private party, you will need to pass a background check in order to take the gun into possession. To carry a handgun will necessitate a Concealed Handgun License, available upon application with the following:
- A filled -out and notarized New Mexico Concealed Handgun License Application Form
- An original birth certificate
- Proof of fulfillment of a hunter safety course from a state-accepted instructor
- An active New Mexico ID or driver’s license
- Two unique fingerprint identification cards
- Fund to compensate all licensure fees
