The Montana firearm (gun) bill of sale form composes a verified account of the key components concerning the sale of a firearm. The data comprising the document covers the buyer, the purchaser, the firearm, and the agreed-upon details of the sale. This form severs to protect the owner and seller against any fraudulent activity involved in the transaction and provides liability after that for both individuals should the weapon be used in any criminal involvement.

How to Register a Gun

The state of Montana’s gun laws demands no prerequisite permit to obtain a firearm, and no necessity to register a weapon with the governing law officials formally. There is no need to furnish a license to acquire either a long gun or handgun before purchasing the firearm. Should you elect to buy a weapon new from an authorized dealer, a background check will need to be passed before gaining possession of the gun. The same background check is not insisted upon for private sales of a firearm. Open carry is permitted in the state without licensure for the activities involving hunting, target shooting, or when utilized upon the private property of the gun owner.

How to Obtain a Concealed Weapons Permit

According to Montana Code § 45-8-321, to lawfully carry a concealed firearm, one must first attain a Montana Concealed Weapons Permit. The permit commissions a resident to also carry a concealed gun outside of the state when venturing within a state of reciprocity with the state of Montana. Montana’s age restriction for a permit differs from many other U.S. States, as you are only required to be 18 years of age to apply. You must also have resided within the state for six months or longer to be eligible.

Should you chose to apply for a Concealed Weapons Permit, visit your local county sheriff’s office location with the following listed materials for submission:

  • A Montana Concealed Weapons Permit Application, only available at your county sheriff’s office (view the sample application).
  • An original paper record of completion of a hunting/firearm safety course.
  • An active Montana driver’s license or identification card.
  • Proof of at least six months of residency in the state of Montana.
  • Funds to pay for all necessary permit fees (permit cost is $60 not including background check fee).

You will receive word of denial or approval of your application within a 1-2 month time period. Once your permit is instated, it will remain valid for a total of four years before it will need to be renewed.
