How to Register a Vehicle
To register the vehicle you recently purchased from a private party, visit a County Treasurer’s Office in your vicinity. Bring the requested items below:
- Application for Certificate of Title and/or Registration (Form 411007): Must be completed and signed by all owners.
- Bill of Sale: If applicable
- Current Ownership Document: Usually the certificate of title.
- Identity Verification: For some transactions, the county treasurer may require a driver’s license, state-issued ID, or Social Security card.
- Lien Information: If there is a lien, it should be noted on the application.
- Odometer Disclosure: If mileage is not shown on the back of the title for a vehicle model year 2011 or newer.
- Damage Disclosure (Form 411108): Required for vehicles 8 years old or newer.
- Fees and Taxes: Title, registration, and applicable taxes must be paid to the county treasurer.
Out-of-State Purchase
- Valid out-of-state title in the owner’s name or properly assigned to the owner is accepted for used vehicles.

How to Register a Boat
Iowa residents must register boats with the Iowa DNR through the county recorder in the county where they live. Nonresidents who need an Iowa registration should register in the county where the boat will be used most often.
- Application for Boats, Snowmobiles, ATVs and ORVs (Form 542-8067)
- Bill of Sale / Proof of Ownership.
- Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin, if the boat is new or the applicant is the first owner.
- Payment for registration/title fees and taxes, if applicable.
- Previous registration.
- Title, if applicable.
Out-of-State Purchase
- Out-of-state registration documents, signed over by the previous owner, if applicable.
- Out-of-state title, signed over by the previous owner, if the boat was titled.

Register a Firearm
There is no requirement for individuals to register a firearm in Iowa.
