Bill of Sale (Requirements)

  • Purchase price ($)
  • Date of sale
  • Buyer’s name and address
  • Trade-in allowance (if any)
  • Sales tax paid (if purchased from a licensed vehicle dealer)

Register a Vehicle

The buyer must bring the following documents to a Driver’s License Office Location within 20 days from the date of purchase ($15 penalty if later).

  • Bill of Sale
  • Application for Certificate of Title (Form MVT 20-1)
  • Driver’s License: That includes a local county address. If no local county address, proof of residency is required (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement, or an affidavit of residency).
  • Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form MVT 5-5)
  • Original Certificate of Title: Required for all model-year vehicles under 35 years old.
    • Driver’s license: A copy of each person on the title.
    • No Title: If the buyer does not have the title, a replacement must be requested (apply online).
  • Proof of Insurance: With the following minimum limits:
    • $25,000 for bodily injury/death liability for one person in an accident
    • $50,000 for all injuries/deaths in an accident
    • $25,000 for property damage
  • Tag Receipt: If an older vehicle was used as a trade-in.
