- Trade-in allowance (if any)
- Sales tax paid (if purchased from a licensed vehicle dealer)
How to Register a Vehicle
The buyer must bring the following documents to a Driver’s License Office Location within 20 days from the date of purchase ($15 penalty if later):
- Vehicle bill of sale
- Odometer disclosure statement (Form MVT 5-5)
- Application for certificate of title (Form MVT 20-1)
- Original certificate of title: Required for all model year vehicles under 35 years old.
- No Title: If the buyer does not have the title, a replacement must be requested (apply online).
- Driver’s license: That includes a local county address. If no local county address, proof of residency is required (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement, or an affidavit of residency).
- Proof of insurance: Must be current and valid (insurance card is recommended).
- Tag receipt: If an older vehicle was used as a trade-in.
- VIN inspection form: If the vehicle was purchased from out of state.
