Register a Vehicle
The buyer must bring the following documents to a Driver’s License Office Location within 20 days from the date of purchase ($15 penalty if later).
- Bill of Sale
- Application for Certificate of Title (Form MVT 20-1)
- Driver’s License: That includes a local county address. If no local county address, proof of residency is required (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement, or an affidavit of residency).
- Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form MVT 5-5)
- Original Certificate of Title: Required for all model-year vehicles under 35 years old.
- Driver’s license: A copy of each person on the title.
- No Title: If the buyer does not have the title, a replacement must be requested (apply online).
- Proof of Insurance: With the following minimum limits:
- $25,000 for bodily injury/death liability for one person in an accident
- $50,000 for all injuries/deaths in an accident
- $25,000 for property damage
- Tag Receipt: If an older vehicle was used as a trade-in.
Out-of-State Purchase
- VIN inspection (Form MVT-5-9): Go to a Local Vehicle Licensing Office to obtain an inspection.

Boat (Vessel) Registration Forms
Interested parties may register their vessels by visiting one of the following locations within the county they reside:
- Judge of Probate Office
- License Commissioner Office
- Marine Patrol Division Office
and prepare to have the following documentation fulfilled:
- Bill of Sale
- Application for Boat Registration, Transfer, Replacement, and Duplicate
- Prepare to pay any fees specific to your county.
Firearm Registration Forms
Alabama does not demand the registration of guns within the state, nor is there any licensing or permits required unless someone would like to access the authority to carry a concealed handgun, in which case, they may apply through their local sheriff’s office.
