How to Register a Boat

To apply for registration, prepare the following required documentation to be delivered to your nearest Maryland Department of Natural Resources:

  • DNR Form B-240 (Bill of Sale)
  • Original lien release, if the title or registration record shows a lien.
  • Original Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin, if the vessel is new.
  • Original Maryland title
  • Payment for registration/title fees and vessel excise tax.

If the vessel was purchased in Maryland and will be used mostly in Maryland, it must be registered within 30 days of purchase to avoid penalty and interest.
