How to Register a Vehicle

Go to the Wisconsin DMV to apply for title and/or license plates, or use eMV Public to apply online.

  • Bill of Sale: Helpful
  • Driver License or Identification Card: A Wisconsin driver license or identification card is required for the online process.
  • Lien Release: Required if a lienholder is listed on the front of the title and the loan has been paid off.
  • Odometer Reading: Required on the back of the title for vehicles model year 2011 and newer.
  • Title: The original title must be signed by the seller.
  • Title and License Plate eApplication/Receipt: Required if applying online and mailing in the documents afterward.

Notes

  • You must display Wisconsin license plates or a temporary plate within 2 business days of purchase to legally operate the vehicle.
  • After completing the online transaction, you must mail the required original documents to:
