How to Register a Gun
For residents of New Hampshire, the laws surrounding gun ownership and carry are some of the least restrictive in the country. No registration is necessary for either long guns or handguns, and there is also no requirement to furnish a permit to purchase or own a gun. In addition, the state of New Hampshire is one of the few states that does not mandate a federal background check when procuring a firearm from a licensed dealer or private individual. Open carry of long guns and handguns is acceptable without licensure, but to transport, the weapon must be unloaded per New Hampshire Revised Statutes § 207-7.
How to Obtain a Concealed Carry Permit
Since February 2017, New Hampshire has passed legislation making it legal for the permitless carry of a firearm in-state. Although you no longer need a permit or license to carry a gun openly or concealed, residents can still apply for a Resident Pistol Revolver License to allow for travel out-of-state within the borders of accepted reciprocity states.
To apply for this license, get ahold of the below-listed documentation to apply in person at your county sheriff’s office:
- A completed New Hampshire Application for Resident Pistol/Revolver License (Form DSSP-85).
- An accepted form of compensation for all included fees.
Notification of denial or acceptance of your application will be sent to you within 14 business days, along with instructions on how you will receive your license.
