How to Register a Boat

Missouri requires motorized boats and vessels, sailboats longer than 12 feet, and most outboard motors to be titled and registered through the Missouri Department of Revenue. To register a boat, the owner can visit any Missouri license office with the required paperwork.

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Out-of-state title, properly assigned, if the boat came from a title state.
  • Proof of taxes paid to another state, if applicable.
  • Descriptive Bill of Sale or MSO, if used as ownership proof.

The buyer has 60 days from the date of purchase to title a newly purchased boat, vessel, or outboard motor. Out-of-state residents have 60 days from bringing the boat into Missouri if it will be kept in Missouri for more than 60 consecutive days.
