How to Register a Vehicle

You have 40 days from the time of purchase to have your vehicle registered and be able to operate it on public roads legally. To register your newly purchased vehicle, advance to an OMV (Office of Motor Vehicles) location of your choice and come supplied with:

  • The title was signed over by the previous owner, as well as the present registration.
  • A bill of sale or receipt proving that you purchased the vehicle being registered.
  • A legitimate form of photo identification (driver’s license, state ID, passport, etc.)
  • Form DPSMV 1799 (Louisiana Vehicle Application), completed and ready to be submitted for approval.
  • Proof of a valid insurance plan (not required if you purchased the vehicle from a dealership).
  • If the vehicle in question is 10 years or older, the seller must provide the buyer with an Odometer Disclosure Statement, which will then be presented to an OMV official.
  • If the vehicle being registered was financed, you must provide one of the following documents: A UCC-1 (Uniform Commercial Code-1) Financing Statement, Security Agreement, or Chattel Mortgage.
  • A method of payment to satisfy any fees accrued (cash, check, debit/credit card, money order).
