How to Register a Vehicle

Visit your nearest DMV location with an appointment(!) to register your new or used vehicle. Be sure to come equipped with the materials listed below:

  • Bill of Sale (Form H-31)
  • Connecticut Insurance Identification Card: Proof of Connecticut insurance is required. Minimum coverage includes:
    • $25,000 for bodily injury to one person
    • $50,000 for bodily injury per accident
    • $25,000 for property damage
  • Connecticut Registration and Title Application (Form H-13B): Completed by the owner.
  • Identification: An acceptable form of identification is required for each person listed as an owner.
  • Proof of Ownership: If the vehicle was purchased in Connecticut and is newer than 20 model years old, a title is required. For vehicles 20 or more model years old, the previous owner’s registration may be used instead of a title.
  • Be prepared to pay the registration fee, sales tax, and any applicable extra fees.

How to Register a Boat

Connecticut requires boats and personal watercraft to be registered through the Connecticut DMV. You can then visit any Connecticut DMV office with the following paperwork for submission:

  • Acceptable identification, such as a driver’s license or U.S. passport, for each listed owner.
  • Bill of Sale (Form H-31).
  • Payment for registration fees and applicable sales tax.
  • Proof of ownership, such as a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin, title, previous registration, or U.S. Coast Guard documentation, depending on the vessel.
  • Vessel Registration Application (Form B-148).

Out-of-State Purchase

  • Current out-of-state registration, if the vessel came from a state that does not issue vessel titles.
  • Out-of-state title, if the vessel came from a title state.
